THE MAGIC OF WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT IN THE "ROCINHA" SAMBA SCHOOL
For the first time in its history, the Brazilian carnival celebrations in Rio de Janeiro will have a samba school parading with an international theme. When entering the sambódromo parade grounds of Avenida Marques de Sapucaí on Sunday, February 9th' at 7:30pm, to open the Special Group parade of to schools, the Academicos da Rocinha will present "The enchanted voyage of Zé Carioca to Disney" theme. The school will stage a visit by Zé Carioca, the famous Brazilian character created by Walt Disney in the '40's, to Walt Disney World Resort in commemoration of its silver anniversary. The 90 minute show will be produced by carnival artist, Flavio Tavares.
THE SCENARIO:
Zé Carioca was created by Walt Disney as a symbol of friendship between Brazil and the United States and as a tribute to the citizens of Rio, known as "Carioca". He came to life in the 1943 animated classic "Saludos Amigos" with the voice of composer Jose Oliveira, singing and dancing to the Winning samba of that year's carnival, "Watercolor of Brazil". Zé Carioca went on to gain fame in "The Three Caballeros", in which he invites Donald to visit Brazil.
The scenario of Rocinha's presentation in carnival will be divided into three parts: The Magic Kingdom, Disney- MGM Studios and EPCOT.
In the first section, Zé Carioca tells us how Walt Disney World was created beginning with the eruption of Cinderella's castle From the marsh lands of central Florida. Ze Carioca then embarks on a trip on the roller coaster of Space Mountain, passing through tunnels of flashing lights until he reaches Discovery island. Ze then tours the Island on a raft, sailing through sambódromo its exotic wilderness and many caves until he finds himself with the Pirates of the Caribbean.
In the second, Ze Carioca, dressed as a film director, swinging from side to side on a camera boom, passes the Chinese theater, the Tower of Terror and sets of Disney films including "The Little Mermaid", "Aladdin", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Beauty and The Beast"and "The Lion King".
In the closing section, Zé Carioca leads the audience on n futuristic voyage by train from the creation of the earth to the future of "The Land" which lives in perfect harmony with nature. The parade ends with Ze Carioca inviting all dance the samba with him around a huge Walt Disney World anniversary cake.
The Rocinha samba school was founded on March 30th, 1988, and since 1989 has participated in all carnivals at the. It began in the entrance group where it won first prize, later participated in parades of the third and second groups until being promoted in 1992 to Group l, where it gained Ist runner up position in the carnival of 1996 thus reaching the Special Group for its 1997 presentation. Rocinha's colors wazzu are green, blue and white, and its symbol is the butterfly.
The samba for their presentation was composed by Carlinhos Mustang, Wilsinho Saravá, Gilson da llha Porchat Mirinho and will be sung by Alexandre, Paulo XIV, Zezé da Rocinha and Amauri.
The 1997 carnival parade will be opened by the Brazilian medal Winners of the 1996 Olympic games of Atlanta, USA.
Carnival is the most celebrated cultural event in Brazil and it has been winning growing admiration in many countries thanks to the quality shows that the samba schools present. "As this is the first year in which we are permitted to present an international theme, and Academicos da Rocinha is proud to be parading in Group I, I could think of no better theme than to pay tribute to a place which has brougth so much happiness to so many brazilians than Walt Disney World" said Izamilton Gois, president of the samba school. Clemente Kohler Connolly, Manager of International Marketing for Walt Disney Attractions, said that Walt Disney World is deeply honored by the tribute which it will receive from Rocinha. "The Brazilian carnival" - he said - "is a spectable unrivaled in the world. We are very moved with this tribute, which comes from a country whose natural happiness represents so much of what Walt Disney World is all about. This is the best anniversary gift we could have received for our 25th-year celebration."
